Peter Thiel, who joined then-Facebook’s board of directors in 2005, will not stand for re-election at Meta’s 2022 annual meeting.
Thiel said in a statement, “It has been a privilege to work with one of the great entrepreneurs of our time. (Meta CEO) Mark Zuckerberg‘s intelligence, energy, and conscientiousness are tremendous. His talents will serve Meta well as he leads the company into a new era.
According to published reports, the desire to be more involved in Republican politics spurred the move, with Ryan Mac and Mike Isaac of The New York Times reporting that Thiel wanted to focus on the midterm elections that are coming up in November, while Lizette Chapman and Kurt Wagner of Bloomberg reported that he plans to boost his support for the agenda of former President Donald Trump during the run-up to November.

- Marc Andreessen, co-founder and general partner, Andreessen Horowitz
- Drew Houston, co-founder and CEO, Dropbox
- Nancy Killefer, retired senior partner, McKinsey
- Robert Kimmitt, senior international counsel, WilmerHale and lead independent director
- Sheryl Sandberg, chief operating officer
- Tracey Travis, executive vp and chief financial officer, Estée Lauder
- Tony Xu, co-founder and CEO, DoorDash
- Zuckerberg
Zuckerberg said in a statement, “Peter has been a valuable member of our board, and I’m deeply grateful for everything he has done for our company—from believing in us when few others would, to teaching me so many lessons about business, economics and the world. Peter is truly an original thinker who you can bring your hardest problems and get unique suggestions. He has served on our board for almost two decades, and we’ve always known that at some point he would devote his time to other interests. I’m grateful he’s served on our board for as long as he has, and I wish him the best in his journey ahead.”
