The tragic death of National Basketball Association superstar Kobe Bryant dominated conversation on Facebook and Instagram in January, according to Facebook IQ, the social network’s research arm.

Meghan Markle and her split from the royal family also heated up the people category on both platforms in Facebook IQ’s Hot Topics for the month.

Valentine’s Day topped the holidays and events category on both platforms, trailed by Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

In the entertainment category, Facebook users chatted up the Golden Globe Awards and the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards, while the order was reversed on Instagram.

Sports fans on Facebook talked about the National Football League’s San Francisco 49ers, the NBA and mixed-martial-arts fighter Conor McGregor, while the Super Bowl LIV champion Kansas City Chiefs, quarterback Patrick Mahomes and McGregor paced Instagram.

In the brands and products category, Facebookers made their picks on DraftKings and then got behind the wheel of the Chevrolet Corvette, while Instagrammers dipped their brushes in Sherwin-Williams paint and donated to the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

Finally, in the food and drink category, Instagrammers kept it mellow in January and sipped on caipirinhas and Stella Artois, while Facebookers opted for the more rowdy combination of Doritos and Monster Energy.

Facebook IQ measured subjects that drove disproportionately high volumes of discussion on both social platforms, marking the latest in a Facebook-Adweek Hot Topics monthly series that began in 2015.
