People celebrated the holiday season and rang in the new year on Facebook and Instagram, as Christmas and New Year’s Eve dominated the monthly Hot Topics list from Facebook IQ for December 2019.

Friday the 13th was also noteworthy in the holidays and events category on Facebook, while Instagrammers talked about Art Basel.

Users on both platforms focused on a galaxy far, far away, as Star Wars dominated the entertainment category on Facebook, joined by Eddie Murphy and Mariah Carey, while people on Instagram chatted up Yoda, Saturday Night Live and the Golden Globe Awards.

In the people category, Time Person of the Year (climate activist Greta Thunberg) and Kris Jenner paced Facebook, while the late Caroll Spinney and Annie Leibovitz did so on Instagram.

Sports fans on Facebook talked about college football’s Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl and Tiger Woods, while Drew Brees and Anthony Joshua drew the most cheers on Instagram.

Sports Illustrated and Change.org led the way last month in the brands and products category on Facebook, while Instagrammers discussed Toys for Tots and UNESCO.

Finally, in the food and drink category, Facebook users chased down the Big Mac with champagne, while Instagrammers took a more sophisticated approach, firing up their fondue pots.

Facebook IQ measured subjects that drove disproportionately high volumes of discussion on both social platforms, marking the latest in a Facebook-Adweek Hot Topics monthly series that began in 2015.
