Confirmed: Giant Eagle to Y&R, Maxus

Aug 13, 2008

- Andrew McMains

NEW YORK The Chicago office of Young & Rubicam has landed creative and media planning duties on Giant Eagle supermarket after a review, the client has confirmed.

WPP Group's Y&R partnered with sister shop Maxus in Chicago to pitch the estimated $15-20 million account. Sources said that the choice came down to Y&R and Interpublic Group's McCann Erickson here, though independent Cramer-Krasselt in Chicago also presented work.

McCann's media partner was sister shop Universal McCann in New York. C-K has its own media department.

Y&R and Maxus succeed The Richards Group, a Dallas-based independent that opted not to defend the business. Media buying duties remain at RJW Media in Pittsburgh.

"We are excited to begin this new relationship and to utilize the many resources available at Young & Rubicam to bring a fresh campaign to Giant Eagle customers in the near future," Giant Eagle said, in a statement. Y&R had no immediate comment.

Giant Eagle has some 223 supermarkets and 130 fuel and convenience stores in Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia and Maryland. Nearly a third of the supermarkets are independently owned and operated, according to gianteagle.com.

The New York office of Ark Advisors managed the review process.

This story updates an earlier post with client confirmation and additional details.
