Report: Facebook and Messenger Were the Most Downloaded Apps of the Decade

Social media led worldwide downloads in 2019

Mobile data and analytics company App Annie took a look at the biggest applications of 2019, as well as the biggest apps of the decade.

Looking at worldwide iOS and Android downloads combined, App Annie found that Facebook Messenger was the most-downloaded app of 2019, followed by Facebook, WhatsApp, TikTok and Instagram in the top five.

By worldwide consumer spending, Tinder was the top app of 2019, followed by Netflix, Tencent Video, iQIYI and YouTube.

App Annie also revealed the top “breakout” apps of 2019. In a blog post, Adithya Venkatraman, market insights manager at App Annie, said these breakout apps are “those with the largest absolute growth in downloads or consumer spend between 2018 and 2019.”

For downloads, Likee, Noizz, Helo – Share Your Life, Hago and YouTube Music were the top five breakout apps worldwide in 2019, while YouTube, Google One, iQIYI, Tinder and LINE Manga were the top five breakout apps by consumer spending worldwide in 2019.

App Annie also revealed the top apps of the entire decade, with the majority of the most downloaded apps being social media applications.

In a second blog post, Venkatraman said, “Looking at the most downloaded apps of the decade, Facebook has dominated the mobile space representing the four most downloaded apps of the decade with Facebook, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram. Communication and social media apps are consumer favorites, accounting for seven of the top 10 apps by downloads this decade.”
