Apple Announces iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus

Apple described the devices as the "most advanced iPhone ever."

At a press conference in San Francisco Wednesday, Apple introduced the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, describing the devices as the “most advanced iPhone ever.”

The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus feature the Apple A10 Fusion chip, which Apple said is “the most powerful chip ever in a smartphone.”

Apple explained in a press release:

The A10 Fusion’s CPU now has four cores, seamlessly integrating two high-performance cores that run up to two times faster than iPhone 6, and two high-efficiency cores that are capable of running at just one-fifth the power of the high-performance cores. Graphics performance is also more powerful, running up to three times faster than iPhone 6 at as little as half the power, enabling a new level of gaming and professional applications.

Elsewhere, the devices offer improved camera systems, with both the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus offering a 12-megapixel camera including optical image stabilization. In addition, the iPhone 7 Plus has a 12-megapixel telephoto camera.

On iPhone 7 Plus, a new depth-of-field effect will use both cameras on the device to take portraits, and technology including machine learning will separate the background from the foreground in those portraits to create better pictures. This depth-of-field effect will be included in a free software update launching later this year.

Finally, the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus include stereo speakers and will provide sound that is “two times louder than iPhone 6s.” While these devices do not include headphone jacks, Apple will include its new “EarPods with Lightning connector” earbuds with each device. In addition, the devices will come with a headphone jack adapter, which will allow users to continue using older headphones and accessories with the new devices.

The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus will be available in more than 25 countries beginning Sept. 16. The devices will be available in silver, gold and rose gold, as well as in two new finishes: black and jet black.

The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus will be available in 32-gigabyte, 128-GB and 256-GB models, with prices starting at $649 in the U.S. The new jet black finish will be available exclusively in the 128-GB and 256-GB models.
