The 10 Most Popular World Cup Teams On Facebook

With the World Cup raging on in South Africa, fans have been turning to Facebook to show their support of teams. So which teams have the most support on the site? We've taken a look at the participating teams and have come up with a list, less than two weeks after the World Cup first began. While these numbers are changing on a daily basis, the most popular teams are a pretty good indication of how popular soccer is in each of the countries. Chile Chile is the most popular World Cup team by all measures. Not only do they have the most fans, just under 420,000, but they also have the highest number of fans as a percentage of the country's internet population. After winning their first game over Honduras, this team has a rapidly growing fan base. Italy While not the most popular based on internet population size, the Italian soccer team has close to 400,000 fans. After tying in their first game, Italy is by far one of the most popular World Cup soccer teams. England After tying the U.S. in the first game, England actually has much greater odds of going far in the World Cup. Unfortunately the goalie gave up a pretty bad goal in the first game but there's plenty of time to rebound. With over 320,000 fans, England has a significant fan base, which isn't exactly surprising considering the number of Facebook users in the U.K. USA While the U.S. doesn't appear to be playing very well so far in this World Cup, the team has the support of over 200,000 fans on Facebook. As a percentage of the country's internet population, the number of fans is pretty low, putting the country in 28th. I can't say this is surprising as the country doesn't have a huge soccer fan base and with a low performance so far, I can't imagine that the U.S. will jump up the leaderboard anytime soon. Argentina With just under 200,000 fans, Argentina is a relatively popular World Cup team. While it's still a comparatively low number of fans based on the country's more than 10 million Facebook users, Argentina still has a pretty solid base of fans on Facebook. Mexico Mexico, another country where soccer is extremely popular, doesn't actually have many Facebook fans. With 168,000 fans, it's not that many as a percentage of the country's Facebook population, which is over 12 million. However the Mexico team page is growing in popularity so it wouldn't be surprising to see the team rise up the leaderboard. Greece With a bankrupt country, Greece is hoping to have a good showing in the World Cup, hoping that it can help boost the economy in some way. While tourism in Greece isn't exactly dependent on the country's performance in the World Cup, it surely can't hurt, also helping to boost the country's morale. As a percentage of the country's internet population, Greece is the 6th most popular World Cup team, attracting over 140,000 fans. Spain With over 10.4 million Facebook users in Spain, there is actually a surprisingly low number of fans on the Spain soccer team on Facebook. While 115,000 fans isn't anything to sneeze at, soccer is massively popular in Spain so one would imagine that the country would have a greater number of fans. Brazil Brazil, who has many of the most popular soccer players in the world, is the 9th most popular World Cup team with 93,000 fans. Given that the country has a relatively low number of Facebook users, in comparison to the total number of people online in Brazil, it's not exactly surprising that the country ranked so low. Personally, I wouldn't be surprised to find the majority of fans of the Brazil team living outside of the country. Australia Australia has the 10th most popular Facebook Page of all the World Cup teams, with more than 83,000 fans. As a percentage of internet users in the country, it's a relatively low number.
