Red Cross Praised for Handling of Tweet Mix Up

The Red Cross is getting some belated Valentine’s Day love for the way it handled what could have been the latest Twitter disaster.

A Red Cross staffer accidentally posted a tweet about Dogfish Head beer (mmm… beer) on the Red Cross Twitter line. The mistake was caught, the tweet was taken down, and with a bit of humor, the issue was resolved.

On top of the Twitter response, the Red Cross wrote on its blog:

While we’re a 130 year old humanitarian organization, we’re also made of up human beings. Thanks for not only getting that but for turning our faux pas into something good.

Individuals and Dogfish Head beer have gotten out the word to drive blood donations. Moreover, we’ve seen praise across the Twitterverse for the handling of this situation.

“So let this be a lesson for everyone – honesty is always the best way to go about things, especially on Twitter,”  wrote Racepoint Group’s Ben Haber on the firm’s RaceTalk Blog.

We agree. These things do happen. You’re managing a personal Twitter account, one for work, one for your blog, one for your mom. The most important thing is turning the negative to a positive in a forthright way.
