LinkedIn Is a Newcomer to the Reactions Game, With 4 Options Joining Its Like Thumbs-Up

The professional network added celebrate, love, insightful and curious

When Facebook globally rolled out its Reactions feature in February 2016, the additions of the love, haha, wow, sad and angry options to its iconic like thumbs-up seemed natural. But can the same be said of LinkedIn?

The professional network introduced its own set of Reactions last week, with its already existing like thumbs-up joined by celebrate, love, insightful and curious.

Product manager Cissy Chen said in a blog post that the feature started rolling out last week and will be available globally via the LinkedIn mobile applications and the web in the coming months.

She added that LinkedIn members had been expressing the desire to learn more about why someone liked their content and provided examples of how the professional network’s new Reactions can be used.

Chen suggested that celebrate can be used to praise a connection’s accomplishment or milestone, such as a new job or a speaker’s role at an event. Love is a way for members to express “deep resonance and support,” such as for a conversation on work-life balance or mentorship. Insightful helps people highlight great points or interesting ideas. And curious helps express the desire to learn more about thought-provoking topics.

LinkedIn product designer Ricardo Rivera penned a lengthy blog post of his own to explain the process of developing Reactions, and Chen provided a summary: “This process included looking at what people are already talking about to better understand what feedback they wanted to express and receive. For example, we analyzed the top one- and two-word comments being used and what types of posts people are sharing most. We also conducted global research with LinkedIn members to get feedback on the specific reactions to ensure that they were universally understood and helpful.” David Cohen is editor of Adweek's Social Pro Daily.
