GigaOm's Analysis Of FCC Net Neutrality Ruling

Last week I wrote a post that linked to Engadget’s consolidation of the mobile phone company reactions to the FCC Net Neutrality rulings. At the time the official text of the ruling had not been released, but now the text is available and GigaOm has done a thorough analysis of it. GigaOm’s article is lengthy, but highlights important points in bold, so you can quickly scan through it if you prefer.

My take away from the article is that only the No Blocking provision is good for consumers. The other provisions are either bad or neutral for consumers. Unfortunately, not even the No Blocking provision applies to mobile Internet access, as GigaOm says,

“..it leaves the mobile field open for the creation of walled gardens and incentivizes the creation of application-specific devices. Sure, these new devices and walled gardens may be lucrative, innovative and life-changing, but they encourage innovation around pricing and business models as opposed to innovation of new technologies to deliver better networks or new services that combine the full power of the web with mobile devices.”
