Former Facebook News Feed Head Adam Mosseri Is Taking the Reins at Instagram

He assumes his new role today

When Instagram co-founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger dropped the bombshell news late last week that they were leaving the company, speculation turned to Adam Mosseri, the Facebook-owned photo- and video-sharing network’s vice president of product, as a potential successor. Today, the speculation was confirmed.

Mosseri will officially assume the role of head of Instagram, starting today. He will oversee all functions of its business and is tasked with recruiting new heads of engineering, product and operations.

The elevation of Mosseri is a logical step if reports of Systrom’s and Krieger’s frustrations with Facebook leadership are accurate, as he would be less likely to clash with top brass than someone who had spent more time with Instagram.

Mosseri joined Facebook as a product designer in July 2008, after spending roughly one year as a product designer and user interface engineer at communications integration platform TokBox.
