Want to have a name that includes hearts, stars, or other symbols? As of last week Facebook is starting to push people away from such names, posting an alert on their homepage which asked them to post their authentic names instead.

Interestingly enough, many of the users reporting the problem are international users. However there are many of others who have posted symbols in their names as an expression of themselves or even to support a cause. As Inside Facebook pointed out, “Some users are reporting that Facebook is disabling Chat and their new feed until they comply with the request, though this is unverified.”

Whether or not user is going to step up efforts to remove symbols from names is unknown, however it’s most definitely a widespread problem. Many younger users like to add symbols to their names for entertainment or just to differentiate themselves from others. With Facebook’s limited profile customizations (no ability to customize the design), it’s not surprising to see users posting things in their name.

Do you know of anybody (yourself included) who has posted a symbol in their name? Have they received similar alerts?
