YouTube Revamps Its Homepage for Desktop and Tablets

Longer video titles and larger, richer thumbnails top the changes

YouTube last week refreshed the look of its homepage for desktop and its applications for Android and iOS tablets.

Senior product manager Essam El-Dardiry detailed all of the changes in a blog post.

The redesigned homepage includes longer video titles and larger, richer thumbnails, as well as higher-resolution video previews.

Some content shelves have been removed, but YouTube users will still see rows of videos for topics including breaking news and music mixes.

Icons below each video will also enable people to more easily recognize their favorite creators and content.

YouTube introduced an add to queue feature on desktop, enabling people to choose which videos to watch next without interrupting the video they are viewing at the time.

El-Dardiry said videos added to this queue won’t be saved after users close their browsers, but they can save those videos to their permanent Watch Later playlists.


In June, the Google-owned video site introduced a way for users of its iOS and Android apps to no longer receive suggestions from particular channels, and El-Dardiry wrote last week that this feature was extended to desktop.


At the same time, YouTube introduced a way for Android app users to choose their favorite topics and customize their home feeds, and El-Dardiry said this feature is coming to desktop and tablets soon.

He wrote, “We’ve been experimenting with this updated design for a few months and—based on your input—have made dozens of improvements to the layout, most notably adjusting the thumbnail sizes and showing more videos on larger screens. We’re excited to roll this out to everyone, and we hope you’ll find the updated design and new features helpful as you navigate the incredible breadth of content available on YouTube.” David Cohen is editor of Adweek's Social Pro Daily.
