Working for ProPublica Pays

Nonprofit investigative-journalism site ProPublica promotes itself as “journalism in the public interest,” but working there apparently serves the financial interests of its top management and reporters fairly well, reports Mike Taylor of sister blog FishbowlNY.

According to ProPublica’s 2009 Form 990, president and CEO Paul Steiger took home $571,687 in 2009 salary and $13,430 in other compensation, followed by treasurer and secretary Richard Tofel ($320,978 and $21,312, respectively), and managing editor Stephen Engelberg ($343,463 and $31,231).
