Wireless Mobile Storage To Carry More Media

If you have a significant amount of pictures, music, or movies that you want to access with a tablet or smartphone, but your device is limited by the amount of storage it has, Seagate is providing an option to help you. The Seagate GoFlex Satellite mobile wireless storage provides 500 GB of portable storage that you can access from mobile devices with WiFi.

While cloud storage providers like Amazon, Dropbox, and Sugarsync provide the ability to store media that you can access from a mobile device, they have limitations that the GoFlex Satellite overcomes. A comparable amount of storage from services like Amazon costs more than the $199.99 price of the GoFlex; Amazon charges $500 per year for that amount of storage.

Access to the media you store with the cloud storage providers is on another company’s servers that you access via the Internet. If you don’t have an Internet connection, which you don’t have control over, you can’t access your media. You have complete control over how you access your media on the GoFlex drive. Finally, there is the fact that you are putting your media and files on someone else’s servers, which means that you have to trust the company to protect and maintain that information.

If you own an iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad, you can install the free GoFlex Media app to access the media on the device. You simply choose the “GoFlex Network” as the WiFi network to connect your device to the drive and then use the app to browse the files on the device. Movie and music files can be played by simply tapping the file name. An Android verison of the GoFlex Media app currently does not exist, but Seagate says that you can access files via a web browser, suggesting that the drive might have a built-in web server.

The GoFlex drive supports 802.11 b/g/n WiFi access and has a rechargable battery, and it will be available at Best Buy and Amazon in July 2011.
