VW Netherlands Giving Away A Passat…On LinkedIn

In one of the first ever branded YouTube campaigns on LinkedIn, Volkswagen is giving away a Passat to the person with the most powerful LinkedIn profile in the Netherlands!

In one of the first ever branded YouTube campaigns on LinkedIn, Volkswagen is giving away a Passat to the person with the most powerful LinkedIn profile in the Netherlands!  The Passat is a car that is typically driven by business people so Volkswagen decided to reach out to its target demographic where they thrive—on LinkedIn.

Users in the Netherlands can challenge their friends to find out who has the more powerful profile, based on education, positions held, number of contacts and number of recommendations.  The winner is determined to be LinkedIn, while the loser is LinkedOut (LinkedUit in Dutch).  If you prove yourself to be the most powerful of all of your LinkedIn connections than you could win a brand new car.

You can enter by logging into your LinkedIn profile at LinkedUit.nl.  While it appears that only LinkedIn users in the Netherlands are eligible to win, you can still log in to see which of your friends has the most powerful LinkedIn profile.  The site is in Dutch, but it’s still pretty easy to figure out how to log in and see who your biggest competition is.

So what does this campaign have to do with the Passat?  Well, Volkswagen is comparing the various powerful features of business moguls—lots of connections, great recommendations and more—to all the powerful features of the Passat—lane assist, rear assist, park assist and more.  Check out the video below to find out more about the campaign.

This is one of the first campaigns to benefit from LinkedIn’s new open API, and a pretty cool campaign it is.  I’ve got a feeling this thing is going to spread like wildfire (at least in the Netherlands), spreading the good word about Volkswagen as well as getting loads of new people to sign up for LinkedIn in the Netherlands.  On the other hand, it will probably start a few tiffs, as friends grow jealous of their more powerful LinkedIn contacts.  But really, don’t these powerful profiles deserve the reward for putting the effort and hard work in to growing their networks?

What do you think about this campaign?  Do you expect that we’ll see more interactive LinkedIn campaigns in the future?  And Volkswagen—when are you going to give away a free car in the United States?  I’m building up my network in anticipation!
