Vimeo Acquires Video-making App Cameo

Vimeo announced its acquisition of Cameo today, and will allow the app to continue operating independently.

Vimeo announced today its acquisition of the video-creation app Cameo. The app, which debuted last October in Apple’s app store, was named one of the “Best of 2013” in iTunes. While the market for video-creation apps is over-saturated, Cameo won praise for its simplicity and functionality when it launched last year.

The app has the requisite layer of social, enabling users to engage with the community, follow other users and share to various video platforms. Videos are stored in the cloud, and the app allows users to collaborate with others on the same video at the same time.

How To Use Cameo from Cameo on Vimeo.

“What we love about Cameo is that it gives even novice video makers the power to create beautiful, well-crafted videos,” said Vimeo CEO Kerry Trainor in a release announcing the news.

The terms of the deal were not disclosed, but part of the deal is that Cameo CEO Matthew Rosenberg will transition to vice president of Cameo and the team will report to Vimeo chief technology officer Andrew Pile. According to Recode, Vimeo plans on letting Cameo to continue operating as a standalone app, just like its acquisition of GIF-making app Echograph. Earlier this month, the company invested $10 million in VOD content.
