Video Proof: Tom Green Was The First Planker

Tom Green was planking before planking was planking.

The Australian planking craze has taken the world by storm over the past few months.  Everyone is planking, from the Canadian Football League to IndyCar drivers.  Even dogs are planking.  But guess what?  A new video has surfaced on YouTube that proves that planking didn’t actually originate in Australia.  That’s right—just days ago, a video was uploaded to Tom Green’s YouTube channel, featuring Tom Green planking all the way back in 1994.

In the 17-year old video, aptly titled ‘Tom Green Created Planking – 1994’, Green lays down, face to the pavement, on a busy city sidewalk.  The video description says, “Tom Green was planking before planking was planking.”

The Wikipedia entry for planking aka “The Lying Down Game”, now attributes the invention of planking to Tom Green.  It says, “The lying down game is claimed to have been invented by Tom Green in 1994.  This claim has not been independently verified so far.”

I suppose that Tom Green will continue to hold the title of being the first planker, planking before planking was planking, until somebody else comes out with a video or photograph of a pre-1994 plank.  What’s your take on the planking craze, and on Tom Green’s ’94 plank?  Share your thoughts with us in the comments below.
