This Week In Viral Videos – Slam Dunks, Angry Birds & World News

This week has been big not only for viral videos, but for the world from news of the earthquake in New Zealand to continued protests in the Middle East, and this was definitely mirrored by the videos that went viral this week.

This week has been big not only for viral videos, but for the world. News of the major earthquake in New Zealand, continuation of the protests in the Middle East & North Africa, and the Obama administration’s decision to stop defending the Defense Of Marriage Act made this an incredibly memorable week historically, and this was definitely mirrored by the videos that went viral this week. In addition to a clip from last weekend’s NBA Slam Dunk contest, and some other silly viral hits, we saw footage of devastation in New Zealand and Bahrain rake in millions of views. Check out this week’s most popular viral videos below.

Major Earthquake Has Hit Christchurch, New Zealand

Of course, this week our thoughts have been with New Zealanders who were affected by the terrible earthquake. This video of footage after the quake has been viewed over 2 million times this week. Note that some of the footage is hard to watch.

Bahrain’s army deliberately kills peaceful protesters with live rounds

Also garnering more than 2 million views this week is video footage of peaceful protesters in Bahrain being shot at and killed by the army. There has been some dispute about whether or not this video is real, but the general consensus seems to be that it is. This one, like the video footage back in 2009 of Iranian demonstrator Neda being killed, is difficult to watch. However, it definitely shows the importance of social media and web video in letting the world know what is going on during these sorts of protests. Warning: Watch at your own discretion.

I feel a little bit strange continuing this post, considering the fact that we saw so much devastation in these first two videos. However, despite what is going on in the world, the land of viral videos continues to prosper and there have been a number of viral hits this week with a more positive outlook.
