Study: More Than Half Unfamiliar with Social Networking

Synovate_Pile_of_Books.jpgHot on the heels of a report about how the mobile social networking market is set to explode in the next few years comes this piece of news: over half of the general population still has no idea what social networking is.

“A new study from Synovate reveals that well over half (58%) of those surveyed do not know what social networking is,” MediaPost reports. “Even more surprising, more than a third of those who do engage are losing interest in it.”

There’s one saving grace, at least for the portals and any advertisers involved: the study didn’t focus on younger demographics. “Of course this is a reflection of the wide age groups covered in our survey,” said Steve Garton, Synovate’s global head of media research, in the article. “It’s a different story if you only look at younger people.” There’s lots of data in the report, so check it out if you’re interested in how it all breaks down.
