Which States are Most and Least Interested in Fitness on Instagram?

California dominated the fitness conversation on Instagram, beaten out by Nevada with only one hashtag.

Instagram is often seen as the domain of the fashionable and creative. However, there is a strong community of fitness fans and professionals on the Facebook-owned photo- and video-sharing network. TreadmillReviews.net analyzed more than 800,000 geotagged posts featuring popular bodybuilding hashtags–#gains, #shredded, #ripped, #swole and #buff–to discover which states are most and least interested in fitness.

Overall, more than 20 percent of the posts came from California, making the Golden State more fixated on fitness and bodybuilding than any other state. Both Nevada and California dominated the use of #gains with 141.5 and 137.6 posts per 100,000 residents, respectively. Montana and Wyoming were on the opposite end of the spectrum, with scores of 7.2 and 11.5, respectively.

In fact, #gains was the most popular of the bodybuilding hashtags, making up more than 40 percent of the posts analyzed. According to the report, #shredded, #ripped and #swole seemed to be used interchangeably. While individually the hashtags made up 28 percent, 19 percent and 12 percent of posts, respectively, together the three hashtags accounted for nearly 60 percent of posts.

When taking a closer look at the two most popular hashtags–#gains and #shredded–some trends began to emerge. The report indicates that fitness enthusiasts used both hashtags, but #gains was more likely to include a female focus. Nutrition and modeling were also topics discussed using both hashtags, but #gains was slightly more nutrition focused, while modeling was a little more #shredded focused.
