Oculus Revealed the Release Date for the New Gear VR and the Gear VR Controller

Facebook's virtual-reality unit also announced several platform updates

It’s been a big week for Facebook’s Oculus VR virtual-reality unit: After celebrating the anniversary Tuesday of the date when Oculus Rift first shipped, Wednesday brought announcements about the new Gear VR and Gear VR Controller, as well as several platform updates.

Oculus announced in a blog post that the new Gear VR and Gear VR Controller will be available April 21 for $129, adding that current Gear VR owners can purchase the Controller for $39.

The company also detailed the updates to its mobile platform, starting with a rebuild of Oculus Home, which it said reduced load times by three times and provided easier access to videos and other content.

 

Oculus Avatars are now available across Oculus Rift and Gear VR, and users can take their avatars into experiences including Oculus Rooms, Hulu and Drop Dead.

The Oculus Browser launched on Gear VR Wednesday, enabling users to search the web directly from Oculus Home.
