NYC Mayor Wants Municipal Page On Facebook Site

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg reportedly met with Facebook's Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg to talk about how to create a municipal page for the Big Apple.

It’s been reported that New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg met with Mark Zuckerberg to talk about creating a page for the Big Apple.
Though the initial article talks about it being a New York ‘site’, what we think they mean is a New York city fan page, not unlike the ones a lot of cities currently have up and running,

Bloomberg told reporters at a press conference at City Hall, “there’s a lot of potential there,” in reference to the powers of social media, according to an article in

The press conference was originally held to discuss measures to crack down on mortgage fraud, but somehow the conversation turned to social media.

The mayor reportedly said he and Zuckerberg met to talk about how the social networking site can be used by New Yorkers to share information, “as part of a larger effort to harness the power of crowd sourcing,” according to the article. “We need some access to have a Facebook page for the city and I think we’ll work with them and find some ways to do it,” he said.

Facebook hasn’t released an official comment yet, so we can only speculate for now as to the specifics of the fan page. What we do know is that the mayor isn’t 100 percent pro Facebook, according to the article, which said:

The thing that surprises me is why people want to tell others what they’re doing day in and day out. … And you wonder, number one, what on earth? Why does anybody care?,’ he reportedly mused when asked about sites like Facebook and Twitter on his weekly radio interview in the past.

The mayor probably realizes that, like it or not, social media isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. In an apparent effort to beef up their techie skills, the city recently appointed its first Chief Digital Officer, Rachel Sterne, last month. And if you’re wondering, she reportedly has 1,127 Facebook friends. Bloomberg’s Facebook page has around 30,oo0.

Would you friend the Facebook fan page of your city?
