Professional social network LinkedIn has purchased IndexTank, a company that provides search technology for websites and web services. IndexTank develops and provides a range of custom search options for companies to integrate into their platform without having to maintain the search software themselves. LinkedIn’s purchase of the company will improve the social network’s internal search technology.

IndexTank embraces a full-text search API that provides real-time search results with custom sorting algorithm. That way companies can gain more control over what search results are presented. For example, companies can allow users to limit search results to a geographic location.

IndexTank’s features provide real-time feed indexing, instantaneous availability of search data, geo search, automatic faceting and range search. The company will continue at its present location for the next 6 months.

However, some of the main components of its technology will become open source allowing the switch to another search provider a little easier for those who are an IndexTank customer. IndexTank is not charging customers during the transition period and the data will be available to download from IndexTank.

This is the second purchase LinkedIn has prepared for in the span of one week. The company made a previous purchase for Connected. Last week, the company added a new feature — company status updates. The new feature allows you to see the latest news from companies you are following. IndexTank has raised $1.6 million in seed funding from K9 Ventures, Freestyle Capital, Patagonia Ventures, Michael Dearing and Steve Anderson.
