iOS 4.2 Features

November is shaping up to be a great month for gadget geeks. We have seen a number of new Android smartphones starting to be sold and on Monday Windows Phone 7 will be available for purchase in the United States. The Samsung Galaxy Tab, which appears to be the first credible Android tablet to come to market will be available soon and Todd predicts that on Monday, perhaps timed to steal some of Microsoft’s thunder, Apple will release the iOS 4.2 upgrade for the iPhone and iPad. (Even if it doesn’t appear on Monday, Apple has promised it will be available in November.)

iOS 4.2 will be a free for iPad owners and it is a very significant upgrade. I believe that installing iOS 4.2 on an iPad will be like buying a whole new tablet because of the new capabilities it provides. Perhaps the most important thing that iOS 4.2 adds to the iPad is multitasking, and I am also looking forward to being able to organize my apps into folders. It has been a while since Apple announced what is coming in iOS 4.2, so if you own an iPad you might want to review the feature summary on Apple’s web site. Slashgear also provides more details about ten of those new features.
