We’re seeing posts about doughnuts go up at a rate of one every few seconds as of this writing — try doing keyword searches on various spellings of the word doughnut, and you’ll see what we mean.

We attribute a fair amount of the inspiration for these posts to Krispy Kreme and Dunkin Donuts, which are both promoting the day with giveaways described on their respective pages.

Dunkin Donuts created an event page, inviting people to celebrate the day by coming to a participating shop to receive a free doughnut with the purchase of any beverage; RSVPs included 7,208 attending and 894 maybes as of this writing. The chain has also been posting on its own page about the promotion, with the pace of posts picking up starting yesterday.

Krispy Kreme’s page says it doesn’t require a purchase for anyone to claim a free doughnut at participating retail locations. A wall post about the giveaway timestamped early this morning had amassed 3,386 likes and 436 comments as of this writing.

In addition to commenting on the two doughnut chains’ walls, people are sharing links to giveaway details and articles about doughnuts. Plus, folks are also posting status updates declaring which flavors are their favorites, along with where and when they plan to claim their free doughnuts.
