Facebook's best performing type of ad, the sponsored story, has gone live in the homepage ticker, playing on keywords in surrounding posts.

Facebook’s best performing type of ad, the sponsored story, has gone live in the homepage ticker.

Test versions of these ads first started intermittently appearing the ticker early in September, but as of today one such promotion always appears in the ticker on any screen, based on keywords in surrounding posts.

Sponsored stories effectively refrain a brands’ engagement with viewers’ friends.

While Facebook offers seven different variations on this ad, we’re seeing more sponsored like stories than any other type; these ads tell viewers that their friends like a particular brand or page.

Some have expressed concern about the mingling of these ads with non-sponsored content, but the label “sponsored” identifies the ads. Facebook has also waited until furor over the ticker has quieted down before more permanently putting sponsored stories in the ticker.

Readers, do you think the placement of sponsored stories in the ticker presents any ethical problems?
