Facebook Now Encouraging Page Owners To Claim A Place

Facebook has begun encouraging page administrators to claim a place when there is a Place with a similar name.

While many administrators rushed to claim a place early on, there is now a number of administrators that want to revert back from merging their Page and Place. The primary reason is that it changes the format and some have even mentioned that they’ve had issues with the publisher. Regardless of the complaints, Facebook is still actively pushing the service out to businesses as they hope to get them actively engaging with Facebook’s increasingly popular location service. As the image below illustrates, Facebook Pages that have corresponding Places with similar names will receive a prompt encouraging them to claim their place.

As many have noticed, Facebook has been doing all they can to ensure that users spend more time checking in and businesses engage with them after they check in to those places in an effort to take a lead over the entire location arena. This morning however I emphasized that location still has a long way to go, if companies (including Facebook) are arguing that coupons and deals are the key to unlocking all the value from location-based services.

Thanks to Helen Todd for pointing this out to us!!
