Facebook users will soon have a way to determine if they liked or followed any pages or Instagram accounts that were aimed at swaying the results of the 2016 U.S. presidential election.
The social network announced in a Newsroom post that it is creating a portal to enable users to find out if they liked or followed any Internet Research Agency Facebook pages or Instagram accounts between January 2015 and August 2017.
In September, Facebook turned over more than 3,000 ads that were linked to Russia to the Senate and House intelligence committees as part of their investigation centered on the 2016 presidential election. Those ads were purchased by a Russian entity known as the Internet Research Agency.
Facebook said the new tool will be available via its Help Center by year-end, adding, “It is important that people understand how foreign actors tried to sow division and mistrust using Facebook before and after the 2016 U.S. election. That’s why as we have discovered information, we have continually come forward to share it publicly and have provided it to congressional investigators. And it’s also why we’re building the tool we are announcing today.”
