Domo Shares Its Annual Infographic Depicting Data Use in a Typical Minute on the Web

Covid-19 led to increased use of Microsoft Teams, Skype, Zoom

Cloud-based operating system Domo released its eighth annual Data Never Sleeps infographic Tuesday, providing a snapshot of what takes place online in an average single minute.

The company said in a blog post that the coronavirus pandemic and the resulting closures of places like offices, stores, banks, gyms and restaurants led people to become more dependent on applications that enabled them to work and socialize from home, stream video for entertainment and order food and other essentials for delivery.

Domo said roughly 50% of Americans are working from home, leading to an average of 52,083 users connecting to Microsoft Teams every minute, as well as Zoom seeing almost 7 million daily users in March, up from 2 million in February. Approximately 208,333 people are meeting on Zoom every minute.

Also on the video chat front, usage of Google Duo rose 12.4% from January through March, while Skype is seeing about 27,778 people meeting on its platform every minute and WhatsApp has experienced a 51% jump in usage since the start of the pandemic.

Finally, Netflix added 15.8 million new subscribers in the first quarter, with traffic rising 16% from January through March, driven by Tiger King, which tallied 34 million viewers in its first 10 days.

On the social side, Domo shared the following data on what happens every minute:

  • Instagram users post 347,222 Stories.
  • TikTok is installed 2,704 times.
  • WhatsApp users share 41,666,667 messages.
  • Facebook users upload 147,000 photos.
  • Facebook users share 150,000 messages.
  • Twitter adds 319 new users.
  • Instagram business profile ads see 138,889 clicks.
  • LinkedIn users apply for 69,444 jobs.
  • Reddit sees 479,452 users engage with content.
  • YouTube users upload 500 hours of video.

Domo founder and CEO Josh James wrote in the blog post, “Technology continues to disrupt consumer behavior, and having a view into this data year-over-year shows just how much of an impact technology is making to our new normal. Most organizations are also operating differently because of Covid-19, and having real-time data about their own operations and environment can help inform decisions to survive, and even thrive, in response.”
