Twitter CEO Dick Costolo’s UMichigan Commencement Speech Starts With A Tweet

Dick Costolo, CEO of Twitter and a University of Michigan alum, delivered the school’s 2013 commencement speech this past weekend – beginning with, of course, a tweet.

Before starting his keynote, Costolo snapped a photo of the 5,000 students assembled for graduation, tweeting it to his more than one million Twitter followers.

A few highlights from his remarks:

• “You have to figure out what you love to do, what you have conviction about and go do that.”

• “The beauty of improvisation is you’re experiencing it in the moment. If you try to plan what the next lines are going to be, you’re just going to be disappointed.” (Costolo is a former improv comedian.)

• “As you get ready to walk out under the bright lights of the improvisational stage of the rest of your life… be bold. Don’t always worry about what your next line is going to be.”

It’s the second time he spoke at UMichigan in the last six months – in November, Costolo spoke on campus for a “Policy Talk” as part of the Ford School lecture series, discussing how he went from the trenches of computer science at UM to leading a world-changing company.
