If you go to Amazon’s website today to shop on its massive 30-hour Prime Day, chances are you’ll see the ecommerce giant’s Echo devices prominently promoted alongside deals for fashion, electronic and home products.
That’s no coincidence, obviously, since Amazon is pushing its own products, but it appears people are actually purchasing the home gadgets. The site is offering the full-size Amazon Echo, which carries a regular price tag of $179.99, for $89.99. And the kids’ version of its Fire 7 tablet is $69.99, down from $99.99.
According to Amazon, sales for Echo devices doubled today in the U.S. over last year’s Prime Day and tripled worldwide year over year.
The company said that overall, products for home chefs, homes and techies were the most popular categories in terms of sales. Amazon pointed to Senso Bluetooth Headphones and 23andMe, a personal DNA kit that breaks down someone’s genetics, as top-selling items.
High-end kitchen-goods brand Willow & Everett claimed its pre-Prime Day sales Monday were 14 times higher than a normal shopping day. “We expect today to be even bigger and are really excited for the other deals that will be running later in the day,” Camille Arneberg, co-founder of Willow & Everett, said in a statement today.
Indeed, Prime Day is becoming the new Black Friday. According to Adobe, Prime Day is expected to generate half a billion dollars for Amazon, while Black Friday brought in $3.34 billion last year.
It’s no surprise then that other retailers are crouching in on Prime Day. Ebay tried to capitalize, running a promotion at the top of its site that read, “Their Prime Day Is Our Everyday Deal.” Target, Walmart and Dell all also rolled out special web deals to compete with Amazon, CNBC reported.
