Entrepreneur and investor Alexis Ohanian, co-founder and executive chairman of Reddit and managing partner of Initialized Capital, will host Business Schooled, a new podcast from financial services company Synchrony.

Ohanian, husband of tennis superstar and Adweek 2018 Brand Visionary Serena Williams, was also a partner at Y Combinator, helped launch travel search website Hipmunk and started social enterprise Breadpig.

“I wanted to dust off my podcast skills and meet some OG entrepreneurs from outside of the Silicon Valley bubble and beyond the millennial founders I’m used to taking pitches from and working with at Initialized,” he said in an Instagram post

He is also an executive producer on the project, and he worked with Synchrony and its agency, Giant Spoon, to craft the theme of the podcast, choose guests to be featured and manage production.

Ohanian will visit eight cities and, rather than focusing on younger entrepreneurs, he will meet with Baby Boomer and Gen-X owners of small and midsized businesses, touring their headquarters and sharing the stories of how they got their companies off the ground.

Synchrony senior vice president, corporate brand Elspeth Dixon said, “With an estimated 25 million Americans currently running or starting a small business, entrepreneurs are the backbone of the U.S. economy. Business Schooled recognizes the hard work, successes and ambitions of eight remarkable growing businesses. The podcast fosters curiosity to explore how people with different backgrounds and experiences have forged their own unique paths forward.”

Synchrony said listeners of the podcast will be “schooled” on the business and life lessons each guest has learned, which provided the inspiration for the title.

Giant Spoon will mount a full promotional campaign with video content, treating the podcast as it if were a television show on the fall broadcast premiere slate.

Giant Spoon co-founder Trevor Guthrie said, “In sending Alexis Ohanian on the road, we are creating original IP (intellectual property) for Synchrony’s audience that will resonate and build community. This avoids the pitfalls inherent to social and race-to-the-bottom scaled media and gives Synchrony a direct connection to its customers.”

All eight episodes of Business Schooled will be available Nov. 24 via platforms including Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify and Google Podcasts.

The eight cities Ohanian visited were:

  • San Diego, Calif.
  • Sugar Land, Texas
  • Brooklyn, N.Y.
  • Hamilton, Mo.
  • Ft. Wayne, Ind.
  • Farmingdale, N.Y.
  • Palm Beach, Fla.
  • Baltimore, Maryland David Cohen is editor of Adweek's Social Pro Daily.
