While Google was reaching for the Fridge, Facebook was being wowed by Wowd, as the social search newsfeed and ranking service shut down but sent seven engineers and its technology to the social network.

AllThingsD reported that Wowd also sold its patents to a company that has not yet been revealed, and that co-founder and former CEO Mark Drummond started up another company, Jildy, to basically pick up where Wowd left off.

Facebook confirmed to AllThingsD that seven Wowd engineers will be making the move from Serbia to California to continue their work on newsfeed filtering technology with the social network.

Facebook and Jildy both have licenses to use the Wowd patents from the unnamed company that now owns them, according to AllThingsD, and Drummond said Jildy hired five former Wowd developers in Serbia, along with a mobile developer in Palo Alto, Calif., and added that 15 unlucky former Wowd developers did not catch on with Facebook or Jildy.

The two main Wowd patents, govern:

  • A technology that ranked websites based on how they were used
  • A distributed file system
