Why No Kindle In The Cloud?

Amazon now has Kindle apps on lots of platforms–PC, iPhone, Blackberry, Mac, and, of course, the Kindle device itself. If you read lots of Kindle books, you can sync your reading between devices and always have your library at your fingertips. Or almost always, unless, for instance, you’re using a linux netbook.

Why doesn’t Amazon put Kindle in the cloud? Then we could read our books on anything with a browser, and they’d always be synced. eReader apps like Ibis are already doing this, though Ibis doesn’t have much content available yet. Would Kindle in the Cloud be too Google-ish? Does Amazon have an investment in keeping its eBooks on a hard drive?
