Facebook For Zune HD Is Now Working

Yesterday Microsoft released the Facebook client for Zune HD, but a communications issue with Facebook prevented the client from working properly. Late yesterday evening Microsoft worked with Facebook to fix the problem and it has now been resolved. The good news is that the changes were made with Facebook, so no changes need to be made to the client and you do not need to update the program on your Zune. Now that the program is working properly, I can get a better feel for how it works. The beautiful OLED screen of the Zune HD does a great job of displaying the content in Facebook in a small, but very readable font. Navigation through the program is very fluid and the program responds instantly to any taps or swipes. You do get a feel for the left & right navigation of the Zune UI as you move through the Home screen by swipping the top left or right between News Feed, Status Update and Photos. The left/right swipe at the top is similar to how you navigate through Artist, Album, Genres, etc. in the Zune's music library. The program only works in portrait except for viewing photos, in which when you rotate the Zune pictures automatically rotate to landscape and expand to the entire size of the screen. Each picture of an album is loaded one at a time, so when you swipe from right to left there is a little delay for the picture to download. However, after all the pictures load you can swipe left or right through them as fast as in the Zune's Photo section. The program has two settings that are turned off by default. One is to shake to reload, which when you turn it on, you can then shake the Zune to reload any of the pages in the client. I did notice in my testing that the sensor for shaking is very sensitive and the client reloaded even when I set the Zune down. The other setting is Auto Reload that when you select a time amount, the Facebook client will automatically reload the current page after that time has passed. Overall I think the Facebook client for Zune HD is a very nice program, and I think it will be useful when you want to check Facebook and all you have is your Zune. So long as there is a Wi-Fi Internet connection available, the client will work very well. The one problem that I have with the program is with inputting information because the Zune keyboard is very cramped in portrait and the program does not work in landscape. You will not want to write a long message, wall post, or status update on your Zune. If you own a Zune HD and use Facebook, I recommend that you install the application, I think you will find it worth the effort.
