Use AppBrain To Reinstall Apps On A New Phone

Today I received the Google Nexus S phone that I ordered yesterday from Best Buy. After going through the process of associating the Nexus S with my Google account, the phone automatically synchronized all of my e-mail, contacts, and appointments that are on my Nexus One and stored on Google's servers. Normally the apps that I have installed on the Nexus One are automatically restored to a new Android phone, but I disabled the backup of the Nexus One when I discovered thebackup was constantly running and wearing down the phone's battery. I was left with having to manually install all the apps that I want on the Nexus S, and for that I used the AppBrain App Market app. AppBrain started as a web app that provides desktop access to the Android market and has grown to include a number of very useful features. One such feature is the ability to synchronize a list of the apps that are on a phone with an AppBrain account. AppBrain creates separate app lists for each Android phone that synchronizes with an account, and you select apps to copy from one list to another. First, I installed the AppBrain App Market app on the Nexus S, and then logged in to my AppBrain account, which automatically created a new app list for the Nexus S. I then synchronized the Nexus S with AppBrain, which populated the list with the apps that were already on the phone. Next I opened the app list for my Nexus One and selected the apps on that list I wanted installed on the Nexus S. I then synchronized the Nexus S with AppBrain and all of the apps that I selected were added to the Pending Changes list on the Nexus S, as you can see in the screen shot. The final step is to tap Perform Installs, which then sequentially installs each of the apps from the Android Market. AppBrain made it very easy to install 50 of the apps that I use on the Nexus S, and I think I preferred this approach versus having Google automatically install all of the apps that were backed up from the Nexus One because it enables me to control what I want on the new phone. Chances are that you have Android back enabled, to check tap Menu, Settings, Privacy and see if the Back Up My Data is selected. I recommend creating an AppBrain account and installing the AppBrain Market app, if for nothing else than to have a record of the apps that are on your phone.
