The Facebook Journalism Project and News Literacy Project Are Beefing Up Checkology

The virtual classroom teaches students how to assess news and other information

The Facebook Journalism Project is teaming up with national education nonprofit the News Literacy Project to expand Checkology, a virtual classroom aimed at teaching middle-school and high-school students how to assess news and other information.

The expansion of their Checkology initiative will add news lessons and more interactive features, including a lesson on press freedom around the world with 22 country profiles, and a Spanish-language lesson pilot taught by Univision reporter Enrique Acevedo.

Checkology currently helps students identify different types of information, understand bias and recognize the role that algorithms play in determining what people see online, and activities that students can participate in include:

  • Clicking on an interactive map of the world to learn about press freedom from local journalists in various countries.
