Playdom Takes Mobsters from MySpace to iPhone

Social game developer Playdom has marked its entry into iPhone applications with the release of Mobsters: Big Apple. It links your mobile game to your online game, which is currently on MySpace. Already a social game, Mobsters was rather popular on the MySpace network, making the new iPhone game an extension of the online game version. That means there's a more seamless continuation of game play for users, whether they're online or on their iPhone. It's a smart move, as it carries over the social and gaming aspects of Mobsters, maintaining the sociability of the game itself. While there are a few other popular mobster games out there, from Zynga and SGN, the interoperability between the mobile and web versions of the game is something that Playdom is hoping to make leaps and bounds with. SGN has been rather active with its own iPhone initiatives, rolling out several new games through out the year. Taking advantage of the platform cooperative between Apple and Facebook, SGN has been able to work towards a more seamless integration for its mobster games on multiple devices. However, Playdom has linked the game in its entirety between the iPhone and MySpace, and has a presence on Facebook as well. Mobster games in general have really taken off as a trend in the past year, on both web-based and mobile-based platforms. They're rather simple to play, and can be highly addictive for players. Part of the appeal is the social standing based on each accomplishment throughout the game, which pushes players up in rank. Many of these mobster games have been able to take off in the social sense because each rank achievement is blasted out to friends via social networks like Facebook and even Twitter. It means that mobster games are readily popularized through the use of social networks' status updates, which are quite mainstream right now. The accessibility and usability of status updates makes for a great distribution channel when it comes to something as simple as a social gaming accomplishment, and we're going to see a lot more gaming platforms taking advantage of this fact in the coming months. F or Playdom, it's clear that a cross-device tactic is of great interest and can broaden the user experience, accessibility for gamers, and potential for branding and advertising within the Playdom platform itself. It's a similar platform atop a platform approach that we're seeing with several developers, especially as mobile platforms are increasingly able to support social games. Linking these games seamlessly with those existing on web-based social networks is the next logical step.
