Google Engineers Suggests FTC Block Robocalls Like Gmail

After nearly 800 submissions, the Federal Trade Commission has finally selected winners to its crowd sourced Robocall Challenge and one of the winning teams was two Google affiliated engineers. The task was to create a feasible, easy solution to the dreaded 20,000 robocall complaints the FTC receives monthly.

The proposal works similarly to the way Gmail filters spam – users report bogus calls that are used to identify and added to a database that is used to reject unwanted numbers. Google has no intention of implementing the solution into Google Voice, and for now the FTC does not intend to implement the winning solutions. The Federal Trade Commission is hoping that the winning solutions will spur additional work from the private sector.
