Asus Says iPad Eating Into Netbook Sales. So, Why is Asus Taking So Long Getting a Tablet Out?

Direct from the Taiwan based news and rumor site, DigiTimes:

Asustek lowers 3Q10 netbook shipments goal due to competition from iPad

ASUSTeK Computer, Inc. is better known in the U.S. as simply Asus, the netbook pioneer. And, this time, DigiTimes’ article is based on information from Asus’ investor conference. Asus shipped 1.6 and 1.5 million netbooks in the first and second quarters of this year. The third quarter of the year is generally a peak season (probably due to back-to-school buying). However, Asus is projecting 1.4 million units shipped in the third quarter – lower than both the first and second quarters.

Will Asus’ Eee Note and Eee Pad tablet devices lift shipped unit numbers? We won’t know for many months since Asus doesn’t have anything to ship until October. And, even then, it is apparently a Linux (not Android) based eBook reader device.
