Twitter rolled out the first direct messages endpoints for its API v2 (application-programming interface) Thursday.

Staff partner engineer Jim Moffitt explained in a blog post Thursday, “DMs are the fundamental tool for building private real-time notifications on the Twitter platform. They provide a private communication channel for Twitter users and drive key use cases such as customer care and gaming notifications.”

Six foundational endpoints for creating DM conversations and retrieving conversation events were released, and they support group DM conversations for the first time.

Post endpoints for creating new messages are:

  • Create a new one-to-one DM, which adds a new DM to a new or existing one-to-one conversation.
