OnlyFans Launches a Free Streaming Platform, OFTV

OnlyFans, a subscription-only content platform known as a safe haven for paywalled sex work, today announced the launch of OFTV, a free streaming service and app featuring original content from OnlyFans creators. According to the company, it has no plans to monetize or run ads on the service. OnlyFans soft-launched OFTV earlier this year. It now features more than 800 videos from over 100 OnlyFans creators, including channels that explore cooking, comedy, health and music, such as Cheri Fit, Yoga with Taz and Tennis Class with Adi. "From the onset of launching OnlyFans, we have been a creator-first platform to give creators further autonomy and power over their content," said Tim Stokely, OnlyFans founder and CEO, in a statement. "We're all about giving creators more opportunities to get their content out there and more ways for our community to access it." Top line The world of streaming content has exploded in recent years, with nearly every major entertainment company launching a subscription-based streaming service to cater to consumers’ growing appetite for non-linear television. The launch of OFTV coincides with the second season of OnlyFans’ original content series, Unlocked. In the show, host Casey Boonstra interviews creators while they partake in mini-adventures, giving viewers a behind-the-scenes glimpse into creators’ daily lives. OFTV will be free to view and available as an app for mobile devices and watchable via smart TVs. The service is also available on Android, iOS, Apple TV, Roku, FireTV, Android TV and Samsung Smart TVs. Between the lines OnlyFans became a household name thanks to its paywalled sex-work content, but its signature offering has made it impossible for the platform to introduce a mobile app, due to Apple’s content moderation policies. OFTV, which will be available as an app, will not feature sex-work content, a representative confirmed. All material on the service must be safe for work, according to the OFTV submission page. However, safe for work and family friendly are not synonymous. The OFTV series Unlocked features adult creators like Mia Khalifa, while others series, like Coffee and Cleavage, toe the line between talk show and peep show. Bottom line OFTV has no current plans to monetize its service and will not be advertising against its content, a representative confirmed. Creators using the service will not receive any special financial incentive or benefit for contributing to the platform. Instead, the platform aims to expose new audiences to OnlyFans content, as well as introduce existing audiences to new creators. Its accessibility could help alleviate the discovery issues, caused by its rigid paywalls, that have plagued the website. Few platforms had a bigger breakout year in 2020 than OnlyFans. While it has no plans to monetize OFTV, the company no doubt hopes to translate its 130 million registered users and 2 million creators into new revenue streams in the future.
