Many industry observers see Meta’s Oversight Board as lacking power, but after news Friday, they certainly can’t see it as lacking funds.

Meta Friday approved a three-year, $150 million commitment to fund the Oversight Board, with the money going to the Oversight Board Trust, which enables the board to continue operating as an independent entity, separate from the company.

The funds are irrevocable and can only be used to fund, manage and oversee operations of the Oversight Board.

Oversight Board Trust chairperson Stephen Neal said in a statement, “By making this ongoing financial commitment, Meta has issued a vote of confidence in the work of the board and its efforts to apply Facebook and Instagram content standards in a manner that protects freedom of expression and pertinent human rights standards.”
