$1 million isn’t cool. You know what’s cool? $5 billion.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Tuesday that people have raised over $5 billion for nonprofits and personal causes through Facebook and Instagram.

The success of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge in 2014 spurred the social network to create fundraising tools across its platform.

The company said over $175 million was raised for Covid-19-related fundraisers on Facebook and Instagram in 2020.

Facebook said the causes that received the most donations each year since its fundraising tools debuted were:

  • 2016 and 2017: Children’s health and mental health
  • 2018: Equality and civil justice
  • 2019: Environment
  • 2020: Humanitarian aid and environment

And the most mentioned nonprofits via Instagram’s donation
