You May Be Able To Join The What’s Trending Live Audience…If You’ve Got Enough Klout

What’s Trending is working together with Klout to invite top influencers in the fields of Tech, Media/Entertainment and Social Media to be a part of the show’s live audience.

What’s Trending, the web show that launched earlier this year to explore the hottest online trends, has an exciting new announcement—they’ve partnered with Klout, the standard for measuring online influence, to invite top influencers in the fields of Tech, Media/Entertainment and Social Media to be a part of the show’s live audience.  I had the opportunity to talk to host Shira Lazar, as well as a representative from Klout, to find out more.

It would definitely be pretty exciting to see What’s Trending live.  The show, which is presented by AT&T, has already hosted such guests as Lisa Kudrow, Kevin Smith, Drew Carey, Weird Al Yankovic and more.  Shira told me via email, “We’re hoping that the Klout audience members will be active participants in the show, helping to add questions and comments into the social stream in real time.  And, of course adding energy to the live experience by being there!”

How is the What’s Trending Klout Perk working?  Amber Buhl from Klout told me that Klout looked at the groups of people that they deemed influential in Social Media, Tech and Media/Entertainment and then invited a bunch of influencers that qualified.  The Perk is then filled on a first come, first serve basis, as invitees respond.  Klout score does not matter, so long as they are deemed influential by Klout.  Amber told me, “We feel that everyone who is influential on a certain topic will be a good fit for the Perk.”  After tomorrow’s live show we will see which influencers made it to the show.

Klout isn’t the only new partnership for What’s Trending.  They’ve also recently hooked up with GetGlue to let viewers check in while watching the show.  There are two stickers up for grabs—the What’s Trending Live badge that you earn when you check into the show once, and the What’s Trending Live Fan badge, that you earn after checking in five times while the show is live.  What’s Trending launched on GetGlue during last week’s show and they had over 2,000 people check-in during the 30-minute live show.

This isn’t the first time that GetGlue has partnered with a web show.  Kimber Myers, GetGlue Director of Partnerships, told me, “We’ve previously worked with web series partners including Revision3, PopSugar, TWiT, Daily Grape and GeekBeat.TV.”  Kimber also told me that they are nearing 5,000 What’s Trending check-ins now and over 800 rewards have been unlocked for tuning in live.  “The reach from this so far on GetGlue, Twitter, and Facebook is over 1 million people.”

Shira told me, “We’ve always been big fans of both [Klout and GetGlue], and have known people at both organizations for awhile.  While (obviously) each company offers something completely different to the show, the conversations naturally evolved into something that we feel is going to be a tremendously cool new piece to the show.”  It will be interesting to see how these partnerships turn out and what else we will be seeing from What’s Trending in the future.
