Mobile entertainment company Seriously has announced it has raised $18 million in a Series A funding round, led by Northzone. The round also included Korea Investment Partners and existing investors Upfront Ventures, Sunstone Capital and Daher Capital.
This new funding takes Seriously’s total funding to $28 million. Seriously plans to use these new funds to grow its production team and invest in marketing programs, with the overall goal of expanding its Best Fiends mobile game universe into a global entertainment franchise.
Best Fiends was released on mobile in October 2014, and is a puzzle battle game allowing players to collect creatures and level them up to make them stronger. In each level-based battle, players make matches by tapping and drawing lines to connect matching symbols in chains. Since the game’s release, Best Fiends has been downloaded more than 15 million times, and at one point had 1.35 million daily active players.
Seriously plans to release the second title in the Best Fiends trilogy later this year. To grow the brand outside of mobile, Seriously has partnered with Kidrobot to create a line of collectible ‘Best Fiends X Kidrobot’ vinyl toy figures.
We think about the Best Fiends app as a platform for our intellectual property, and since launching less than 10 months ago with a small but experienced team, we have focused on continually enhancing the experience with frequent updates featuring new characters, events and addictive gameplay. We are thrilled to now work with the talented teams at Northzone and Korea Investment Partners as we add more consumer and Asia expertise to support the next phase of growth.
Seriously has released an infographic detailing more stats from the first ten months of Best Fiends’ availability. For instance, up to 850,000 hours of gameplay are played in Best Fiends each day, with 1.6 billion individual levels played so far. Gamers have played the game for 128 million hours to date, with an average session length of 14 minutes.
Best Fiends is available to download for free on the iTunes App Store, Google Play and Amazon Appstore. Check out more stats in the infographic below.
