America isn't that crazy about news either.

Quinnipiac University. Ever heard of it?

This quaint, private institution in Hamden, Connecticut (about two hours from Boston) isn’t always a hot spot for news, but the school does release lots of great polls.

Its most recent such project asked what folks think of two disgruntled and distrusted newsmen: Brian Williams and Bill O’Reilly.

Here are the headlining highlights:

  • 42% think Brian Williams should return to TV
  • 35% believe Williams should not be allowed to come back
  • 24% have no clue what to think about Williams
  • 23% think Bill O’Reilly’s status on FOX News should be changed to suspended (11%) or fired (12%)
  • 51% don’t know enough about O’Reilly’s foibles to form an opinion

The big concern was for journalism as a whole. In fact, 48% said that network news is less trustworthy than it was during Walter Cronkite’s era”

“Bring back Uncle Walter, as Brian Williams and Bill O’Reilly get lukewarm support for their journalistic indiscretions,” Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll, said.

“American news watchers long for an era where the person in the big chair could be truly trusted.”

There are other interesting factoids, such as Tina Fey and Dennis Miller being favorites to replace Jon Stewart, and…well, okay, that’s about it.

Journalism is dead. Long live journalism.
