Nokia Ovi Maps Update with Navigation Features Doesn’t Install OTA or From a Mac

A lot has been said about the implications of this Nokia announcement…

Nokia makes walk and drive navigation free on its smartphones, doubling size of mobile navigation market

Free turn-by-turn (walking or driving) navigation is a big deal. It is even a bigger deal than Google Maps for Android’s navigation capabilities since there are a lot more Nokia smartphones than Android phones. Of course, in the U.S. where we rarely see a Nokia smartphone “in the wild” (other than tech bloggers and gadget hounds), this announcement will have zero impact.

If you point your browser at Nokia’s…

…website, you’ll find that the mobile navigation feature is only available for a relatively handful of Nokia phone models: Nokia X6, Nokia N97 mini, E72, E55, E52, Nokia 6730 classic, Nokia 6710 Navigator, Nokia 5800 Xpressmusic, Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition, Nokia 5230. But, this may be misleading. If you look at the full list of supported devices, you’ll find older phones like the N95 and N96 are supported too. I am disappointed by two things though:

1. There doesn’t seem to be a way to download the software directly from the web to the phone
2. The Maps Updater (installer) only works with Windows PC. A Mac compatible Maps Updater is not available
