New York Yankees pitcher Mariano Rivera dominates Facebook buzz at MLB All-Star Game

Playing in the final Major League Baseball All-Star Game of his 19 year career, New York Yankees pitcher Mariano Rivera took home the game’s MVP award and was also the most talked-about player on Facebook that night.

New statistics from Facebook (via The Sporting News) show that Rivera led Facebook buzz and his appearance in the game was the most-talked about All-Star moment on Tuesday night.

Numbers from PageData show that the Facebook pages for MLB and the MLB All-Star Game gained thousands of fans in the hours surrounding the game.

Facebook shared with The Sporting News the most popular moments and athletes from Tuesday night’s game, compiled from 7 p.m. to midnight EST.

  4. David Wright
  5. Joe Nathan/Cliff Lee (tie)

Events:

  1. Mariano Rivera enters the game and retires the side in the bottom of the eighth.
  2. Neil Diamond sings “Sweet Caroline” during the middle of the eighth inning.
  3. Tom Seaver throws out the first pitch.
  4. Prince Fielder’s triple in the top of the ninth inning.
  5. Mariano Rivera is presented with the MVP award following the game.

The game was most talked about in New York (where the game was played), California, Texas, Virginia and Florida. The top three demographics who posted about the game: 25 to 34 year old men, 18 to 24 year old men and 18 to 24 year old women.

Pages tied to the All-Star Game also got a bump. The official Facebook page of Major League Baseball has gained 3,097 likes in the past 24 hours, and the All-Star Game’s Facebook page also went up by 3,042 fans. The MLB page has attracted 11,151 new fans in the past week, according to PageData.

The most engaging posts from the game on both the MLB and the All-Star Game Facebook pages were of the same image — Rivera tipping his cap.
